About Carolyn Smith
Carolyn Smith, Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern, has a Master's of Science in Clinical Psychology from Troy University. She enjoys facilitating individual and group therapy. Carolyn is a member of the American Psychological Association, American Counseling Association, and the Florida Mental Health Counselors Association and also has training in domestic violence. Carloyn has attended several workshops and has continued her education through classes because of her passion for therapy. She loves to learn all that she can in order to use that knowledge to be a better counselor. However, she also believes that more important than any technique is that the client feels safe enough in therapy to be vulnerable. When clients come to therapy they trust her with their deepest selves. She tries her best to honor that trust.
Carolyn Smith will be co-leading a DBT group and process group. Many of you are probably already familiar with how DBT groups operate, but you may not have heard much about process groups. This section will try to explain the major points. Her groups usually don't have topics. The focus of the groups is interpersonal. According to relational theory, people learn how to have relationships in early childhood. This usually starts with their first relationships, which are a child's caregivers. Through these interactions the child develops a pattern of relating to others. Many times we develop ways of interacting as children that are no longer necessary and may even hinder us in connecting to others. This group allows people to practice new ways of interacting in a safe environment. Then the client can try these new ways of interacting in the larger world. Group work helps people develop a more empathic listening style and teaches clients how to say things in a way that makes people less defensive. Honest, but kind, feedback from the group members is important.
